Overview

Walk-In Meetings

During the academic year, students are encouraged to come to CCE's walk-in meetings, which take place Monday through Friday between 1 pm and 4 pm in the Center for Career Education when classes are in session. These walk-in sessions are often a students first point of contact with the Center. Students can meet with a career counselor for a quick answer (10 minutes or less) to their questions and an introduction to the Center's resources and services. A walk-in appointment sign-up sheet, divided into 10-minute appointments, is made available at the Center for sign-ups shortly before walk-in hours start. As demand for walk-in appointments is typically high at the beginning of each semester, students are encouraged to call the Center before visiting to check on available appointments. During walk-ins, counselors address brief questions on:

  • Career development,
  • Resumes and cover letters,
  • Preparation for interviews, networking events, etc.,
  • Our on-line job/internship database (ColumbiaTrak), and
  • Our on-campus recruiting program for jobs/internships (InterviewTrak).

Career-Counseling Appointments

Students and alumni may make appointments to discuss a variety of career topics with career counselors including:

  • Self-assessment and awareness of individual skills, values, and interests,
  • Research of industries and potential career options,
  • Experience through internships, volunteering, jobs, and activities,
  • Goal setting and implementing a career plan, and
  • Using decision-making skills to make informed career choices.

Students are encouraged to come to a walk-in meeting before making a career-counseling appointment. Appointments are available during business hours Monday through Friday, in person or by telephone. Call the reception desk at 212.854.5609 to schedule an appointment.

Practice Interviews (video recording optional)

Career Counselors can help students develop or improve their interview skills through practice interview sessions. Practice interviews are conducted in person, and feedback is provided. Call the reception desk at 212.854.5609 to schedule a practice interview. So that questions can be customized, specify the industry when scheduling the appointment and send a resume, cover letter, and job description to the career counselor at least two days in advance. If a videotape is desired, it must be specified when scheduling the interview.
