Student Demographics
Consistent with our institutional mission of attracting “a diverse and international faculty and student body, to support research and teaching on global issues, and to create academic relationships with many countries and regions” geographic, socio-economic, religious, and racial and ethnic diversity are all represented in Columbia University’s exceptional student body. This includes enrollment which encompasses residents of all fifty states and one of the highest percentages of international students for any school in the nation. Columbia’s 265,000+ alumni live throughout the U.S., its territories, and in 184 foreign countries. In the 2006/2007 academic year 50% of students in attendance at Columbia were female and 50% were male.
The thriving urban setting which is a hallmark of the Columbia educational experience combines with this extremely diverse population to provide our students with a broader perspective to life outside their own experience, fostering an atmosphere of acceptance, tolerance and discovery.
